Brick House Jerky: Yeah, You’ve Seen It – but Have You Stopped?
Whenever I roadtrip to northern Michigan, one of the most fun things to do is to stop at a party store or gas station and load up on a bunch of road food. You know: pop, potato chips, coffee, beef sticks, cheetos, candy bars, portable cheese...just about anything you can find in these shops is fair game.
Speaking of game – have you ever stopped at the Brick House Jerky Outlet on 127 north of St. Johns? Don't say you've never seen it...we ALL have in our northern travels.
You've seen it and thought "I gotta stop in there sometime".....and have you? I've driven by this unique little shop and gawked at the signs out front that described their wares within and its always peaked my curiosity.

The meats they describe on their road signs are enough to make your jaw drop in wonderment: Kangaroo, Gator, Scorpion, Shark, Python, Turkey, Rabbit, Buffalo, Ostrich, Elk, Rattlesnake, Biltong, Turtle, Fish, Emu, Bison, Camel, Gator Heads, Edible Insects, Wild Boar, Venison, Duck ...and yeah, beef.
If that's too much for you to 'swallow', then try other roadtrip munchies like pickled eggs, pickled bologna, all sorts of cheese & cheese dips, pickled asparagus, Mackinac Island fudge, cold cuts, pasties, ground meats, smoked seafood, crackers, tons of candies, and so much more.
Don't keep passing by this place thinking “one of these days...ONE of these days...” - just turn in there and DO it. Check it out, look around, and try those one or two types of jerky that piques your interest.
The Brick House Jerky Outlet (formerly a school building) is located at 1969 E. Garfield Rd, Ashley. A good many people have already stopped.....have you?
