Doctors Urge Caution: Flu Activity in Michigan Is at a 25-Year High
If you've lived in the Mitten State for any amount of time, you know that winter is already trying to kill us creatively. Ice. Snow. Potholes that qualify as geographical features. And now, just to keep things spicy, the flu is back in Michigan, and it's showing up like it's auditioning for a reboot nobody asked for.

Health officials at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) say flu activity across the country is the highest it's been in about 25 years, and Michigan is very much a part of the problem. Doctor visits for fever, coughs, and sore throats are at levels we haven't seen since the late '90s, back when dial-up internet was a thing, and nobody washed their hands properly. Progress.
Why Flu Cases Are Surging in Michigan
MLive reports that 11.3% of all outpatient care in Michigan in December 2025 was due to flu-related visits. What's driving it? A new flu strain that decided to arrive fashionably late, after this year's flu shot was already designed. That means the vaccine still helps, just not as well as we'd all like. Think of it as a seatbelt in a demolition derby. Still smart to wear one, just don't test it for fun.

Where Michigan Is Seeing the Most Spread
The good news is hospitalizations aren't spiking like a horror movie jump scare. The bad news is that everyone seems to be coughing directly into Michigan's shared air supply at Meijer, during school pickup, and in every office break room, with an extremely sad Keurig.
How to Protect Yourself This Winter
Doctors warn the next couple of weeks could be the worst stretch, which lines up nicely with everyone refusing to stay home because it's probably just allergies. In January. In Michigan.

Bottom line: wash your hands, cover your cough, stay home if you're sick, and maybe don't tough it out like you're training for a flu-themed CrossFit competition. Winter is hard enough here without adding a 102° fever to the experience.
