Walking into any Michigan Secretary of State (SOS) office used to mean taking a number and immediately trying to decode the room. Where's the line? Is there a line? Is that guy ahead of me? And why is there always a child screaming and roaming the SOS?

Well, Michigan just fixed part of that. Not the screaming kid part (they come standard with most visits).

New Check-In Stations Roll Out Across Michigan

The Michigan Department of State announced in a press release that it has installed new electronic check-in stations at 80 branch offices and wrapped up seven months ahead of schedule. At these locations, you'll now be greeted by a large tablet right when you walk in. Tap the screen, check yourself in, or book an appointment on the spot. Clean, simple, no guessing game.

This all started as a pilot program in Adrian, Alma, Kalamazoo, St. Ignace, and St. Johns. It worked so well that they pushed it statewide. Now all 131 SOS offices either have a staff greeter or one of these self-check-in stations running the front.

Now, before you get too bold and decide to just "pop in real quick"... don't. Michigan's Secretary of State offices are appointment-only. That tablet isn't a fast pass. It's there to help you check in or schedule your visit, and if you didn't plan ahead, your appointment will be later that day... or not until tomorrow... or next week.
