This is where my buddy Mike and I took our prom dates for dinner all those years ago. It was a big deal, you know – four teenagers eating at a high-class restaurant and paying for it. I don’t recall what I had, but I remember what my date ordered: the most expensive thing on the menu, lobster.

I really liked that place: it was Schumm’s Cocktails just off M-52 (S. Main Street), on the southern outskirts of Chelsea.

It wasn’t an octagon or a hexagon building – it is said to have 12 sides. I don’t recall...but I know it had at least ten sides, a decagon.

It was the perfect date restaurant. The inside ceiling was almost like being in a wooden architectural spider web.

I remember the approximate location site, on the west side of M-52...but my recollections from decades ago don’t seem to mesh with current information. Some info says Schumm’s was on the site where Culver’s now sits. Another says it was where Golling Chrysler Dodge is. But I seem to think it was where Starbucks and ATT are.

Which one of us is correct? If anyone can tell us the EXACT spot where Schumm’s sat, it would be appreciated.

Shumm’s opened in 1963, and people came in droves, drawn in by the unique architectural style. I really liked that place.....but 41 years later, in 2004, it was demolished, squelching any chances of reliving the past.

If somebody would've had some foresight, that building would have made a great Oldies radio station......
