Time has done what it always does, and it's marched forward.

It’s 2026. The New Year is here, and with it come all new things—like 13 full moons.

That's right! This calendar year will see a total of 13 full moons, and did you know they all have really fun names?

Full Moons in 2026

  • Wolf Moon - January 3
  • Snow Moon - February 1
  • Worm Moon - March 3
  • Pink Moon - April 1
  • Flower Moon - May 1
  • Blue Moon - May 31
  • Strawberry Moon - June 29
  • Buck Moon - July 29
  • Sturgeon Moon - August 28
  • Harvest Moon - September 26
  • Hunter's Moon - October 26
  • Beaver Moon - November 24
  • Cold Moon - December 23

According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, the different names "come from Native American, Colonial American, or other traditional North American sources passed down through generations."

Where Do Full Moon Names Come From?

The different names help to keep track of the seasons. So think of the name of each of the full moons as a descriptor for the coming lunar month... the Snow Moon runs from February 1 to March 2, which are typically very snowy parts of the winter season. The Strawberry Moon runs from June 29 to July 29, which is right during peak strawberry season. The Cold Moon kicks off on December 23... I think you get the picture.

Super Moons of 2026

2026 will also see a grand total of three super moons: the Wolf Moon, the Beaver Moon, and the Cold Moon.

What is a super moon? It's when Earth is a little closer to the moon than it usually is, so it appears bigger and brighter than it normally does too. NASA says, "At its closest point, the full Moon can appear up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than the faintest Moon of the year, which occurs when it’s farthest from Earth in its orbit."

At this time, we've passed the first super moon of the year (the Wolf Moon on January 3). So, we'll have to wait until November 24 to see the next one.
