Michigan’s 7 Forbes 5-Star Hospitals — None in Big Cities

Michigan has only seven 5-star hospitals, according to a new list from Forbes identifying the best health care organizations in the nation. Perhaps even more striking — none of those 5-star hospitals is in a city any bigger than Kalamazoo.

Forbes evaluated thousands of general acute care hospitals across the country in terms of patient outcomes, hospital best practices, value, and patient experience, among other criteria. When the dust settled, only 253 hospitals nationwide ended up with overall 5-star ratings.

So, which Michigan hospitals made the cut? Let's dive in.

Munson Healthcare Grayling Hospital

Besides being one of the 7 Michigan hospitals with an overall 5-star rating, Munson Healthcare Grayling Hospital was the only one in Michigan to receive a 5-star rating in the area of patient outcomes.

It was one of just a dozen hospitals to receive 5 stars in the area of value, but did not rate quite as well in regards to patient experience or best practices.

Bronson Battle Creek Hospital

To be fair, all 7 Michigan hospitals that got overall 5-star ratings from Forbes also received 5 stars for value, including Bronson Battle Creek Hospital.

Bronson Battle Creek got 4 stars each in the areas of patient outcomes and patient experience, and 3 stars for best practices.

Bronson Methodist Hospital

Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo got almost identical marks as its cohort in Battle Creek.

Despite the overall 5-star rating, it only received 2 out of 5 stars in the area of best practices.

Holland Hospital

The only Michigan hospital to receive 5 stars from Forbes in the area of best practices was Holland Hospital.

It almost had 5 stars across the board, except for its 4-star rating in the area of patient outcomes.

Corewell Health Lakeland Hospitals St. Joseph Hospital

It's a lot to put on a sign, but Corewell Health Lakeland Hospitals St. Joseph Hospital also ranked among the 7 Michigan hospitals to receive 5 stars overall from Forbes.

It received 4 stars for patient outcomes, and 3 stars apiece in the areas of best practices and patient experience.

Corewell Health Ludington Hospital

Corewell Health Ludington Hospital fared slightly better than its St. Joseph sister.

Beyond its 5 stars overall and for value, it obtained 4 stars in every other metric.

Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital

Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital, located in Ypsilanti, was the only hospital on the eastern side of the state to get 5 stars overall from Forbes.

It scored 4 stars for patient outcomes and patient experience, and 3 stars for best practices.
